Former pro football player Eric Johnson wraps his arm around his leading lady Jessica Simpson in these exclusive new promo pics taken last month in New York City while shooting her Christmas TV special.
(Since then, the happy couple has gotten engaged. Hence, no engagement ring in these pictures!)
During the TV special, Jess, 30, will be performing songs off of her new holiday album, Happy Christmas, in stores NOW. The show will air @ 7-8PM during Thanksgiving (November 25) on PBS. There will be a very special guest singing a duet with her — don’t miss it!
Jessica Simpson has undergone a noteworthy personal style evolution, inspired, she says, by coming to terms with some serious body issues over the course of the last year. She stopped fighting her hourglass silhouette, for instance, after realizing that “we all obsess over looking like the perfect Barbie type, and that’s not always what’s beautiful. It’s about making peace with yourself.”
This sea change came out of her globe-spanning journey for her VH1 show, The Price of Beauty—a trip that also provided the tools to diversify her wardrobe. “I encountered such vibrant colors,” says Simpson, recalling shopping excursions that yielded ethnic accessories way out of her casual-pretty comfort zone: ornate Indian bangles, leather bags from North Africa. “Morocco was a huge influence on me when it comes to jewelry and fashion,” she says. “You can’t help but want to buy caftans when you’re there!”
Anyone who thinks of Jessica Simpson as a dumb blonde is way behind the times. The performer’s new reality show starts in March and she’s got big plans for future projects. See these outtakes from the singer’s shoot with Norman Jean Roy in Hollywood. For more of our interview with Simpson, pick up the March issue of Allure, on newsstands February 23.
Jessica Simpson wore a gray T-shirt, J Brand jeans, and Yves Saint Laurent boots to the shoot. Between takes, she slipped into sandals that she had brought with her, from her latest shoe collection. “I prefer heels to flats any day,” the singer said of the sky-high nude wedges. Here, she poses for Norman Jean Roy in a Fendi dress.
For her new VH1 show, Jessica Simpson’s The Price of Beauty (which premieres at 10 P.M. EDT on March 15), Simpson traveled to seven foreign countries to explore different concepts of beauty. “When I think of America, it’s very diverse, but we do have the cookie-cutter way we’re supposed to look, and going to all these countries, it’s so completely different. I was fascinated going on that journey to discover that, even just for myself,” said Simpson, here in a silk dress by Lanvin and bangles by Rosena Sammi.
Simpson was game for the toned-down look the Allure team had in mind for her. “After learning what beauty means to different women around the world, we wanted to celebrate Jessica’s individual beauty,” said her hairstylist Ken Paves, who also appears on Jessica Simpson’s The Price of Beauty.
“Jessica usually looks classic,” explained makeup artist Jeannia Robinette. “I chose to make her more raw.” First, Robinette smudged a shimmery black shadow along Simpson’s top and bottom lash lines before curling the lashes and coating them with mascara. Next, she brushed on peachy pink blush and dabbed on lip balm mixed with a rose-colored stain.
“I wanted to make her hair look glamorous but lived-in,” said Paves. He clipped two rows of extensions onto the bottom half of Simpson’s head, then he curled all her hair before brushing it through. Paves kept the curls round and perky with a dose of hair spray.
Simpson is aware of the strengths of her goofy persona. “I’m vulnerable in any moment,” says Simpson. “I don’t care if the cameras are on or not, you’re going to get the real me. There’s no reason to mask that, because that’s what has given me the chance to be in a powerful position.”
