Though mom-to-be Jessica Simpson arrived at Milk Studios in Los Angeles on a crisp January morning looking quite the fashionista in a Roberto Cavalli wrapdress, Lanvin wedges, and an oversize YSL leather bag, it quickly became clear to everyone on set that Simpson’s burgeoning belly should take center stage for the principal shot.
ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee styled an enthusiastic Simpson after past iconic magazine covers featuring expectant mothers—Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford—by dressing her in nothing but opulent Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry. Hairstylist Robert Vetica used Moroccanoil products (Simpson’s favorite) to create ethereal, voluminous waves, as makeup artist Pati Dubroff emphasized Simpson’s pregnancy glow with champagne eye shadow and liquid black eyeliner. After confidently posing au naturel, Simpson sipped Perrier, chatted about her quirky pregnancy cravings (cantaloupe with salt!), and then channeled Brigitte Bardot as photographer Carter Smith captured the perennial girly-girl in a series of ’60s-inspired looks from Louis Vuitton and Prada.
At the end of the day, Simpson’s fiancé, former New Orleans Saints tight end Eric Johnson, stopped by for an intimate portrait à la John and Yoko before whisking his woman off to a cozy dinner at Mr Chow.
