The clink of teacups will be replaced by the chink of poker chips as a grande-dame U.S. resort rolls out the red carpet for its reincarnation as a gaming destination this weekend.
The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., is due to fly in stars including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Brett Favre, Brooke Shields, Shaquille O’Neal and Jessica Simpson to help inaugurate its slot machines and table games at Friday night’s grand opening of its Casino Club. Lionel Richie is set to perform.
The 103,000-square-foot Casino Club, added by new owner Jim Justice and containing 38 gaming tables and 320 slots plus restaurants and shops, is just part of a makeover for the resort, which dates back two centuries.
Devotees of the elite retreat that Greenbrier press releases call “America’s Resort” might be relieved to know that the masses won’t be allowed in to play poker and the slots: Only guests, homeowners, members of Greenbrier sports clubs and those attending a big convention there and staying elsewhere can gamble.
